Time Machine was originally NOT bootable at all, until Apple started including Recovery partitions in the OS. Older versions could not be downloaded to newer system for a long time now. The fact that OS Catalina can not be downloaded on a machine running Big Sur and that the System Recovery from Time Machine backup does not include anymore the OS, appears to me a clear Apple policy, started with Big Sur, of discouraging in all ways the downgrade of the OS in use: I would like to hear your comments on this.Ĭlick to expand.Didn't start with Big Sur. I keep therefore the pen-drive as an emergency tool for future use. Now the USB pen-drive seems complete and working since it’s recognized as bootable when the MacBook is switched on with the "option" key pressed I did not perform any installation trial of OS Catalina on my MacBook because it could be longer than what I can afford, having in the end the intention of stay with Big Sur. I bypassed the problem visiting the internet site which provided the instructions: "How to download macOS Catalina installer without Mac App Store". It has been not so simple, since I could not download on my MacBook with Big Sur the image of OS Catalina from the Apple Store. Many Thanks to both the Senior Members for their answers.īefore reading the answers, yesterday afternoon I tried to create a bootable USB pen-drive containing the image of OS Catalina, because this seemed to me the only way to solve the downgrade problem. (Note: My English translation of the Italian original messages/titles provided by the system may non coincide with the messages provided by a machine set with English language. Many thanks in advance for the needed help. Is it correct to say that it involves only the files changed since the date of the system snapshot without any re-install of the operating system?

Last observation: the system recovery starting from a system snapshot does not present none of the messages reported above and it performs in few seconds. Just for speculation (I don’t need now to do it): what could be a procedure to downgrade the system to Catalina, without loosing data and without having a Time Machine system backup of Catalina? At present the system recovery options at my disposal seems to indicate that I can only re-install Big Sur.

Is this new behavior normal? Why with Big Sur Apple requires the complete system recovery to be performed in two separate steps?įor reasons not important to the present discussion, I don’t have anymore a full backup of Time Machine with OS Catalina.

If necessary, install newly macOS, then use Migration Assistant to transfer data from the backup".īecause with old versions of macOS, till to Catalina, the system recovery from a Time Machine backup included in the same step both the system re-installation and the user data recovery, I’m now a bit confused…

I noticed that after having selected the option “Recovery from a Time Machine backup” and after having selected the desired backup, the following message pops up: "To transfer the data from the backup use the Migration Assistant.

Hi, I wanted to verify on my MacBook Pro (13 inch - 2017) how the system recovery works (Big Sur 11.1) from a Time Machine backup by restarting the MacBook in Recovery mode (CMD+R).
